ENGINEERING The Telephone System
CONVERSION TO DIAL
HOMER, MICHIGAN
The office I worked in during my stay in Homer,
just before the building was removed. This is exactly
how it looked back in 1957.

Only the
Street Light
Remained
in 2017

On the 2017 Aerial map above, the No.1 makes where our little office was located.
No.2 marks Telephone Office. The 2017 Office below photo shows the entrance
boarded up. CLICK THE PHOTO to see how it appeared, Brand New, in 1957.
The Water tower has been replaced too.

The No. 3 marks
the  Lumber Co.
where I had
stakes made.
The old guy who
cut the stakes, cut his thumb off learning how to cut the stakes.
They were 4 in.  wide and 24 in. long - cut diagonally to make a point for easy pounding into the ground. These stakes marked where new poles were to be placed.

The No. 4 marks this corner on the left.

That white pillared shop was a restaurant in 1957 where I ate most of my meals.

Down the street, right,
was KIRTS ROOMING
House, where I roomed.

The Land Lady's daughter, "Laura" had a horse. I took a photo of her from the roof of this corner building.

The No. 5  marks  this set of buildings.  Behind the flag was  Fred's Soda Shop. I was only 21 so it was not too hard to fit in with 17-18 year old high school kids here. It was great fun.

Actually it was right in my walking patch to the new telephone office. There was a  back door right on the alley that the kids used after school.

The Resident Engineer was LEO OPPENNEER.
Daverman's gave him this 1950 Plymouth which he drove from his home in Litchfield where he is now buried. I used it many times to do my work.

PLYMOUTH INTERIOR
I bought this new 1957 Chevrolet
 just as this project began.
It took me for many miles of happy traveling back
and forth to my home town FENNVILLE, and
to the Roller Skating Rinks.
Yes, the girls liked it too.

Several of Vern's Old Phones are from Homer.
He sold some to a Florist In Saugatuck where they were made into Flower boxes. In 1957, many old Homer phones were burned in the street.
