After Leo retired from the General Telephone company, (formerly the Tri County Tele. Co.) of South Haven, MI he took on the project of rebuilding the telephone plant of the Calhoun Telephone Co. of Homer Michigan. The company had been purchased by partners in the J. & G. Daverman Co. of Grand Rapids. An REA loan had been made to replace in total, the old magneto telephone plant with a modern dial plant. The new outside plant was of aerial open wire and plastic insulated cable. Leo was hired as the Resident Engineer. He was aided by Vern Bouwman who was training for a future in telephony. I wish I had a photo of Leo's old Plymouth, I hated to drive it.

After completing the Homer project, Leo and Vern moved on to another company the Daverman’s had purchased. Whiteford Telephone Company in Lambertville, Michigan. The photo at right was taken in the old telephone office kitchen by Vern’s future relative, his wife’s Aunt Helen Jacobs, who was an operator on the old system.
