Considering software to use in any one project is not always apparent. The information on this page assumes the use of a PC. Software for simple letters with text only is one thing. Software for reports with embedded images is another. Software for creating construction drawings is yet another.

Mastering all the software necessary to be proficient in your work takes time. To start, you will usually be directed to use what is considered standard where you work.
Microsoft WORD is a major choice for creating letters, reports, or even writing a book. Most persons have not began to use all functions of word to their advantage.  One major use is to convert word documents into HTML web pages. You really should take classes for WORD, Most have not and have wasted days on creating information, improperly. See example - right.

One author, using word, wrote a book of over 300 pages included hundreds of photos, each sized at 600 dpi. All text was in "Times" font because it is a font that does not loose it's shape in printing, i.e. tip points of characters "e","a", etc. On completing the  word file, it was converted into pdf files. A pdf file will not run when it is viewed on a different computer like a word file can. See PDF below.

WORD
Before you type anything...
1. Learn about "STYLES", start each document from scratch then don't change styles too often.
2. Learn "HEADERS & FOOTERS" which includes page numbering.
3. Learn to put contents up front with Forward information and make that area a "SECTION" of the document, changing the page number routine.
4. Learn how to use "Heading 1", "Heading 2", etc. formatting.
5. Learn how to identify image "Figures" or "Tables".
6. Using the steps above, save your choices as a "TEMPLATE". There may be templates out there that fit your requirement. It is generally NOT a good idea to just pick up an existing document, clean what you see off the screen and start. There will be too many Styles embedded in the file that will confuse you.

Microsoft EXCEL is a major choice for a spread sheet files.

Microsoft PAINT  can create sharp images that can be converted and posted on the web in very small files with the color NOT dithered. Paint can capture images that appear on the screen but do not have a means to click and save, i.e. click "PrintScrn" and save in Paint..

Another use for Paint is to create diagrams that are to appear in word files.

See Verns page on EDITING PAINT
PAINT SHOP PRO  is one software for editing, printing  and converting images into a Gif or Jpg file. If images created in  PAINT need to be resized, It needs to be converted to a jpg file or the lines will double or even disappear. Paint Shop Pro is a lower cost software that will perform most editing requirements.  It accomplishes a lot more than Microsoft Photo Editor.

AUTOCAD  is necessary for creating drawings for contruction of buildings and parts within. Autocad files maintain a true record of locations and measurements necessary to make accurate changes and additions of any  component within or around a building. All departments need access to these files to create their new or changing requirements.

AUTOCAD
VISIO  is very useful in creating diagrams that need to kept up to date and be viewed by several persons or departments.

Visio can be used to create drawings, but if departments need to be trained to create and maintain drawings in Autocad, why train or confuse them with other software.

PDF  files are very useful for viewing and printing documents and drawings of any size. Data is always very clear to view  when it is re-scaled to 100%. A pdf file is really an image. In creating a pdf, the original must first be configured to be printed where the whole image appear.
